Joomla Ecommerce with Bob Bloom and LasalleMart

Joomla eCommerce with Bob Bloom

Most JUGT talks are from the perspective of integrators and designers. LaSalleMart's creator offered a unique -- and uniquely Canadian -- perspective on Joomla ecommerce.

Everyone present was treated to Bob's passionate explanation of why Joomla should be your platform for eCommerce (and was very restrained in mentioning why LaSalleMart should be your choice for eCommerce). Not wanting to tread the same ground, Bob did refer everyone to the 2012 JoomlaDay Chicago presentation by Deb Cinkus on various platforms, but gave a quick summary.  One point for Canadian entrepreneurs was how to take ownership of your ecommerce ecosystem and take advantage of tax rules to enhance your business value. Paraphrasing his words, "Don't pay the Vig, or you'll be sleeping with the fishes".

As well, Bob gave a virtuoso rendition of the song Wonderful World (Don't Know Much about PHP), a thrilling preview of "Joomla! - The Musical" - All Singing! All Dancing! Coming soon to a server near you.  Busby Berkeley would be quivering in his tap shoes, if he was still alive.

For more words of wisdom, Bob blogs, podcasts, and participates in the Joomla! community.

Discussion touched briefly on our next event - a longer format meeting with Niv Froelich doing a presentation on using the Twitter Bootstrap Framework - his plan is that people will be able to make use of this to create a simple responsive web site by the end of the evening.  This event will be held in a new location, for us, near Yonge and Sheppard - details as soon as they're confirmed.

Our thanks to Oasis ARS on the Danforth for providing their premises for our event.

Good day, Our Topic for Today... Joomla eCommerce with Bob Bloom

Most JUGT talks are from the perspective of integrators and designers. LaSalleMart's creator will offer a unique -- and uniquely Canadian -- perspective on Joomla ecommerce

At the Oasis ARS on the Danforth.

Thursday May 30th, 6:30pm > 8:30pm

See the event page and register your seat

Bob Bloom is the mover and shaker behind the LaSalleMart eCommerce extension for Joomla.  The content of this presentation is so earth shattering that ... uh ... uhm ... well, maybe it is just that he hasn't told me yet.  Come on out and hear his words of wisdom where it touches on your pocketbook.

Bob blogs, podcasts, and participates in the Joomla! community.

Of the 6,500 extensions listed on the Joomla Extensions Directory, only two dozen are listed as "Shopping Carts". Of these, most are niche extensions or bridges to non Joomla carts. Perhaps half a dozen are native Joomla full featured shopping carts. Six out of 6,500!

LaSalleMart will be the seventh listing (listing application pending for three months now, JED is a volunteer run so listing happens when it happens), and is based right here in Toronto.

In his own words, as you'll find on his blog, "Welcome! I am Bob Bloom from Toronto. My posts are about my LaSalleMart eComm extension for Joomla, my LaSalleCMS distro of Joomla, my Toronto Joomla Group participation, my general tidbits about eComm. Yes, I do regular podcasts at my SouthLaSalleMedia.com".

This month's event returns to the Oasis Skills Building location on the Danforth, May 30th starting at 6:30PM.

Oasis OasisSkills Building is a not-for-profit community based organization. This event has been sponsored by local JUGT members and is free to attend. Small donations to Oasis are optional and proceeds go to help maintain the computer lab and facilities.

Pub Night - Wednesday 15 May 2013

Monthly Pub Night, Wednesday, 15 May 2013

Lots of lively discussion, mostly related to the travails of Joomla! 1.5 sites.  With the recent release of 3.1, the truth in the real world is that there are a lot of 1.5 sites out there.  Although a great plarform in its day, security in the Internet age is a moving target, and older 1.5 sites have some vulnerabilities in the base system and the extensions.

How to migrate eCommerce sites to newer software, how to mitigate vulnerabilities when the client can't or won't migrate, performance issues and strategies to get the kind of site that you want.

The discussion was lively, until the start of the Karaoke singers told us it was time to go.

Here's the crowd that was there (except for 1 late arrival).
