14 May 2014 Night Out

It's May! It's May! The lusty month of May! ...

Ooops, well, maybe that wasn't quite the right song lyric to be running through my head for a Joomla! User Group Toronto Night Out, but nonetheless, it is May and this Wednesday, May 14, 2014 is this month's Night Out.

This month we're back in the west end at Scruffy Murphy's, 225 The East Mall, in Etobicoke. As usual, I'll make a reservation under the name "Joomla" for 7:00PM, so if you don't see the JUGT sign, just ask one of the staff to point you in the correct direction.

The event is listed under Meetup, so please register so I know how many to make the reservation for, but even if you don't register join us.

Talk about Joomla!, talk about what you're trying to do with Joomla!, get advice that is at least worth every penny you're paying for it, even just talk about how nice it is not to have to wear 14 layers of clothing after the seemingly never-ending winter we've had.

See you there!

It's May! It's May! ... maybe I'll get that song out of my head by then ....

Joomla! Workshop Farrago

April 23, 2014 is our ‘Joomla! Workshop Farrago’ - a yummy mixture of Joomla!-ey goodness!

We're going to give a series of mini-presentations on 4 topics that should help keep you up-to-date and inform you of some useful extensions to your Joomla! sites.

1. New feature highlights in Joomla! 3.3

April started off with the release of the beta of version 3.3, with the official release of 3.3 scheduled for the day before our workshop.

Doug Pickett will cover some of the things you need to know about and and discuss some of the new features in Joomla! 3.3.

2. Connect your Joomla! web site to the Twitterverse

Alan Langford will showcase extensions that connect your Joomla! website to the Twitterverse.

3. Include multimedia in your website the easy way

Multimedia is more and more a part of websites and that includes ties to Youtube and Vimeo.

Sheldon Seale will show you how to put them on your page easily with the tag. He’ll relate his recent experience on how to do this to a non-Joomla! website (now, why would anyone not use Joomla!, you might ask ...), and he assures us it was easy. Fair warning, some knowledge of HTML is required.

Sheldon will also show you how to quickly use a Custom HTML Module and a Wrapper Module to do the same thing in a Joomla! environment.

4. Connect your social media networks to your Joomla! site

Vic Garbutt will round out the evening by discussing the ways in which to connect your social media networks to your Joomla! site.

The JED has a staggering number of extensions with over 800 in the "social web" category - some are free and some are paid. See how to use plugins to display social networks info on your site, share and like buttons, as well as full integration.

RSVP through Meet Up or just show up..

We’d like you to RSVP through Meet Up so that we know how many people are attending, but please attend in any case.

Our Presenters:

Doug Pickett is the owner of Vogg Technology Limited and brings 30+ years of experience in Web development, Unix/Linux environments, LAN/WAN infrastructure, and VOIP Telephony to his clients.

Alan Langford has been building websites since 1995. Alan is the founder of abivia.net, a provider of high quality web hosting, websites, and extensions.

Sheldon Seale’s entire career has been in Information Technology for some of the biggest names in the industry. Now semi-retired, he builds Joomla websites for a select list of clients.
