Summer is over and JUGT is back! September Pub Night Announcement and Giveaway

E-mail Print PDF

We're trying something different for the fall season, alternating Pub Nights between downtown and more car accessible locations to accommodate the many members who live outside the core.

The first Pub Night will be held at Scruffy Murphy's, in the West end near Cloverdale mall and a five minute bus ride from the subway. For October, we'll be downtown at the Duke; November near Yonge and Sheppard at the Frog and Firkin; and then December back at the Duke. The hope is that more people can make it to at least one event.

Door Prize!

Speaking of making it to an event, we have an extra incentive for this month. Joe Joomla is giving a Joomla beginner training session on September 28th, and he's arranged to have the organizer donate a free session for us to give to one lucky attendee. Even if you can't use it yourself, maybe you know someone who could benefit from it.

We also want to use this event to get input from members on what else we should be doing. It would be nice to have the Saturday meet-ups expand beyond the usual workshop format and we're looking for ideas, topics, and people to give presentations.

JUGT has an updated logo! Joonla User Group Toronto Logo

We wanted something that said "Toronto" a little more than the "T" in the old logo, and what better than the CN Tower?

Feel free to use the logo when linking back to the JUGT site. Links to various sizes and a SVG vector version are available below.

2011 Fall Schedule Coming Soon

E-mail Print PDF

JUGT took a bit of an unofficial break over the summer, but we'll be back in operation next month. I hope to have a full schedule of events on http://toronto.joomla.ca shortly, and I'll be sending out mail reminders, posting announcements, etc. before each event.

The general idea is to hold a pub night on the second Wednesday of the month, and a "meet-up" on the third Saturday. Sometimes external factors force minor adjustments in that schedule, and I'll look for those before finalizing the dates.

I would really like to expand the meet-ups this year. So far they've mostly been of the workshop variety. It would be nice to get more presentations and panel discussions. I'd like to encourage you all to see if you can come up with a presentation topic. I think it's a great opportunity to share something you know with the group. Because presentations are usually about a specific topic, feature, or service, they're also a good place to do a little self-promotion. If you have an idea for a presentation, send me a note and we'll get something in the schedule.

Last spring Bob and a few others were looking at starting a "Pub Night North" event. For a lot of our suburban members, getting into the core of the city is too much trouble, so the idea is to hold a events in location(s) that are more accessible for people who live out of the core. I think the group is large enough to support this and I have some ideas. Let's see if we can get something going.

One of our challenges is that our presence is fragmented across so many social sites. I think it makes the most sense to focus group discussions on the http://people.joomla.org site.

About Joomla User Group Toronto

E-mail Print PDF

Joomla! User Group Toronto (JUGT) is an informal association of users of the Joomla! open source content management system. It draws its members from Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.

The group began as a mailing list gathered from multiple sources, such as sign-up sheets at trade shows and computer fests.

Since the beginning of 2009, the group has been holding regular pub nights, providing an opportunity for members to meet in a casual environment to discuss Joomla and to network. Starting in late 2009, the group is working to hold more formal meetings that feature presentations on specific topics.

One of our goals is to build sufficient momentum to be able to organize and host a Joomla! Day in Toronto.

Membership is open to anyone. There are no dues. There is no process for formally joining the group. There is no formal group structure. The group's "leadership" is anyone with the motivation to step up and make a contribution. There is always a need for more people willing to help out. If you're interested in helping out, get in touch with us via mail, Twitter, Skype, Facebook, or Linkedin.

Get on the list!

The best way to keep up with JUGT is to join our mailing list. So do it.
